What Forza Horizon 6 is

Forza Horizon 6 is the sixth main game in the Forza Horizon series, which began in Colorado in 2012 and has moved to a new country each time: southern Europe, Australia, Britain, Mexico and now Japan. Like the others, it is an arcade-leaning racing game built on the handling of Turn 10's Forza Motorsport, set around a fictional Horizon Festival. You drive anywhere on one large map, enter races where they sit on the road, collect cars, and share the world with other players online.

What is new is mostly structure. You arrive as a tourist with "no fame carried over", unlike in Forza Horizon 4 and Forza Horizon 5, and earn seven Wristbands to become a Horizon Legend. A Collection Journal tracks exploration, the map opens through fog of war for the first time in the series (a pre-release preview, Apr 8, 2026), and Japanese car culture runs through it: Car Meets modeled on the real Daikoku parking area, touge battles on night mountain passes, and Aftermarket Cars modified by their owners. A first look at how to start is on the Beginner's Guide.

Playground revealed the game with a short teaser at the Xbox Tokyo Game Show broadcast on Sep 25, 2025 and showed the first gameplay, the date and the editions at the Xbox Developer_Direct on Jan 22, 2026. Design Director Torben Ellert and Art Director Don Arceta lead it. Why the series finally went to Japan, after years of fans asking, is on Why Japan.

Japan and Tokyo City

The map is Japan, but an interpretive one. Playground calls it "Horizon's most dense map yet" and its "most dense and vertical map yet" in the Full Map Reveal of Apr 8, 2026, running from the streets of Tokyo City to the snowy Japanese Alps. Before launch Arceta said it is bigger than Forza Horizon 5's Mexico but declined to give a number: "I won't put a number on it. It is bigger." (GamesRadar+, Sep 25, 2025). No official area has been published as of Nov 3, 2026, so any square-mile figure you see is an estimate. The whole map is on Japan Map.

There are ten regions, per the "Discover all 10 regions" achievement. Nine are named by the Treasure Cars hidden in them: Minamino, Tokyo City, Ohtani, Ito, Shimanoyama, Nangan, Hokubu, Takashiro and Sotoyama. The tenth is very likely Legend Island, the endgame area, though no official page lists all ten together. Each is described on Regions, and Legend Island has its own page.

Tokyo City is the first region you are sent to and, in Playground's words, "our largest urban area ever"; the official FAQ puts it at five times the size of Forza Horizon 5's Guanajuato. It has suburbs of narrow streets under telephone wires, docklands with cranes and freighters, and a downtown with Shibuya Crossing, Ginkgo Avenue and Tokyo Tower; its elevated roads are inspired by the C1 loop. Outside the city are mountain passes such as Mt. Haruna and Bandai Azuma, Mount Fuji itself, the snow walls of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, and named Landmarks such as Nachi Falls, Hirosaki Castle and Shirakawa-go. Hidden around them are Collectibles, Barn Finds and Treasure Cars.

Seasons change once a week, Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring, each from Thursday at 2:30pm UTC, and Playground says they vary more than in Mexico, with cherry blossom in spring and heavy snow in winter. How they work is on Seasons and Weather. You can own eight houses, build on The Estate, a valley in the north of the map, and lay out Customizable Garages.

The Festival and Wristbands

The Horizon Festival is the campaign. After a prologue that drives a 2024 Nissan GT-R Nismo, an off-road truck, a 1995 Porsche 911 GT2 and the 2025 GR GT Prototype across the map, your friends Mei and Jordy bring you to the Festival site, where you pick from three starter cars: a 1989 Nissan Silvia K's, a 1994 Toyota Celica GT-Four ST205 or a 1970 GMC Jimmy, and all three go into your garage. Six starting events and the Horizon Qualifiers lead to the Horizon Invitational and your first Wristband. The opening is told on Campaign and Story.

There are seven Wristbands, in order Yellow, Green, Blue, Pink, Orange, Purple and Gold. Each is won at a Wristband event, either a Showcase or a Horizon Rush obstacle course, once you have banked enough Festival progress from races, PR Stunts, skills and exploration. Until the Yellow Wristband only C class cars are allowed at Festival events, and Hypercars wait until at least Purple. Gold makes you a Horizon Legend and opens Legend Island, with the Colossus, the longest Goliath race in the series. The order, rewards and what is not published are on Wristbands; the event types are on Races and Event Types and Showcases and Horizon Rush, and the side chapters on Horizon Stories.

Progress also comes as XP, skill points and Wheelspins, and credits; the ways to earn them are on How to Make Money. AI rivals are Drivatars, whose speed was a common complaint at launch and was rebalanced in June 2026. There are 57 Achievements worth 1,000 Gamerscore. Accessibility options include a new AutoDrive, and the radio is on Soundtrack and Radio Stations.

Cars

Playground promised more than 550 cars at launch, "more cars on day one than ever before in a Horizon game". Its official car list, headed "Updated November 2026", holds 667 cars from 95 makes as of Nov 3, 2026, counting the Series 7 rewards that unlock through Nov 26; Playground does not state a current total of its own. Every car is on the Car List, and the Japanese ones are on Japanese Cars.

The Cover Cars are the 2025 GR GT Prototype, in its video game debut, and the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser. Cars come in classes D, C, B, A, S1, S2 and a new R class for track cars (Car Classes and Performance Index); the press lists of the Fastest Cars and Best Cars are dated and attributed. Beyond buying from the Autoshow, cars come as free and loyalty cars, Forza Edition Cars, Barn Finds, Treasure Cars and Aftermarket Cars, and each one can be changed through Upgrades and Tuning and Customization and Liveries. Paid cars arrive through the 30-car Car Pass, one a week until Dec 8, 2026.

Multiplayer and creative tools

The world is shared online by default. Multiplayer covers Convoys, co-op Festival racing, Horizon Open modes such as Horizon Racing and Hide and Seek, Spec Racing Championships and The Trial for Horizon Legends. The Eliminator, the open-world battle royale, was switched off in June 2026 over a credits exploit and came back on Jun 18 with a free 2021 McLaren Sabre for every player. Car culture lives in the Shared World too: three permanent Car Meets, Drag Meets, Time Attack Circuits and, since Sep 7, 2026, Drift Attack at the Shimanoyama Circuit.

EventLab lets players build races anywhere in Japan, and Horizon CoLab lets up to 12 build together in real time. All of it, from tunes to Estates, is shared across platforms, and PS5 players will share it from day one.

The live game: series updates

Like Forza Horizon 5, Forza Horizon 6 runs as a weekly Festival Playlist grouped into monthly series, each four weeks long with one season a week, reward cars and new features; the system is explained on Updates and Series. As of Nov 3, 2026 there have been seven:

Sources: the series posts and release notes linked on each page; Series 7 release notes, Forza Support, Nov 2, 2026.

The latest, Series 7: City Life, arrived with the update of Nov 2, 2026 and adds two permanent Tokyo City routes, the Edo Circuit Road Race and the Shuto Charge Street Race, plus a 35-piece IKEA Prop Pack and a 25 Years of Xbox livery for the GR GT Prototype. It also lowered the Playlist Points needed for reward cars and wiped the PR Stunt leaderboards after exploit fixes. Playground has announced Series 8, Horizon Holidays, for December, with "a permanent race route, as well as 3 new-to-Horizon cars". Bugs and fixes by date are on Known Issues and Fixes. The clip is HokiHoshi's Nov 2, 2026 summary of the update, made before the two routes went live.

PS5 and Expansion 1

Playground announced on Oct 8, 2026 that Forza Horizon 6 comes to PS5 on Jan 26, 2027, with Premium early access from Jan 21, 2027; pre-orders opened that day, with a disc edition at retailers. It had first promised PS5 "later this year", meaning 2026. The port is by Panic Button, which made the Forza Horizon 5 PS5 version, with Playground and Turn 10. It has cross-play and cross-save with Xbox and Steam through a linked Microsoft account, the same prices, a 4K 30fps Quality mode and a 60fps Performance mode, and every Car Pass car at once. Everything is on PS5 Release Date.

Expansion 1 releases on Jan 21, 2027 on Xbox, PC and PS5 at the same moment, with a new location, new gameplay and more cars; its name and price are not announced as of Nov 3, 2026. It is included in the Premium Edition, the Premium Upgrade and the $49.99 Expansions Bundle, and a free update for all players comes with it. Expansion 2 is promised "at a later date".

Editions, price and where to play

On Steam, the Microsoft Store and the PlayStation Store alike, the Standard Edition costs $69.99 (£59.99, €69.99), the Deluxe $99.99 and the Premium $119.99, with a $59.99 Premium Upgrade for Standard, Deluxe and Game Pass players. Premium includes the VIP Membership and Welcome Pack, the Car Pass, two car packs and both expansions. The table is on Editions and Price.

The Standard Edition is included with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, and a digital Xbox copy plays on PC through Xbox Play Anywhere; the Steam version is a separate purchase. Saves cross between all platforms. On PC the PC Requirements start at a GTX 1650 and 16GB of RAM with an SSD, and the game is Verified on Steam Deck. Console modes are on Performance Modes on Xbox and PS5, and launch times by time zone on Release Date and Times.

Reviews and players

Forza Horizon 6 holds a Metacritic score of 90 on Xbox Series X from 83 critics and 90 on PC from 67 critics, as of Nov 3, 2026. IGN, Eurogamer, VGC, Giant Bomb and Dexerto gave it full marks; IGN said it "runs like a titan". The criticism is that the formula is familiar: PC Gamer, at 84, said it "isn't an ambitious sequel" while calling its Japan a joy to race through. On Steam it is Very Positive overall (82% of 43,605 English reviews) but Mixed in the last 30 days (65% of 3,156), read Nov 3, 2026. The outlets and scores are on Reviews.

On Steam it peaked at 273,148 concurrent players on launch day and 302,645 over the first weekend, per SteamDB as reported by Gamereactor, against Forza Horizon 5's 81,096. Microsoft has not announced copies sold. The figures are on Player Count and Sales.

The series

Forza Horizon 6 is made by Playground Games, the Leamington Spa studio founded in 2010 and owned by Microsoft since 2018, which also makes Fable. Its predecessors are Forza Horizon 1 to 3, set in Colorado, southern Europe and Australia; Forza Horizon 4 in Britain, which introduced seasons and was delisted in December 2024; and Forza Horizon 5 in Mexico, which reached PS5 in April 2025 and set the pattern Forza Horizon 6's PS5 version follows. The full order is on Forza Horizon Games in Order.

Cars

  • Aftermarket Cars

Aftermarket Cars in Forza Horizon 6 are secondhand cars parked on driveways and roadsides across Japan, often discounted and sometimes modified or rare, that can be test driven and bought on the spot. A dealership by the Horizon Stadium in Shimanoyama changes its stock with each series.

  • Barn Finds

There is no official best car in Forza Horizon 6; the published picks are opinions. Dexerto's tier list puts cars such as the GR GT Prototype, Koenigsegg Jesko, Pagani Huayra R and Mazda MX-5 Miata Forza Edition in its top tier, and names the 1989 Nissan Silvia K's the best starter car.

  • Car Classes and Performance Index

Forza Horizon 6 rates every car with a Performance Index (PI) from 100 to 998 and groups them into seven classes, D, C, B, A, S1, S2 and R, the R class new for track cars. No X class appears on Playground's car list as of Nov 3, 2026.

  • Car List

Forza Horizon 6 has 667 cars from 95 makes on Playground Games' published car list as of Nov 3, 2026, up from "more than 550" at launch on May 19, 2026. This page lists every one by manufacturer with its class, PI and how to get it.

  • Car Pass

The Forza Horizon 6 Car Pass is 30 cars delivered one a week from May 19, 2026, $29.99 alone or included in the Deluxe and Premium editions and the Premium Upgrade. As of Nov 3, 2026, 28 are named, the last four arriving in November; on PS5 all 30 come at once.

  • Cover Cars

Forza Horizon 6's cover cars are the 2025 GR GT Prototype, making its video game debut, and the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser. Both are in the Autoshow and Wheelspins for every player; the GR GT is S1 771 and the Land Cruiser C 456.

  • Customization and Liveries

Forza Horizon 6 lets players change body kits, rims and paint and design liveries, now also on windows for the first time in the series; it adds over 100 new rims, gloss to matte finishes with metal flake and candy paints, and Paint Body (Advanced) since Sep 2026. Up to 252 vinyls import from Forza Horizon 5.

  • Fastest Cars

The fastest car in Forza Horizon 6, by Red Bull's Jun 22, 2026 ranking of stock cars, is the 2012 Nissan GT-R Black Edition (R35) Forza Edition at 304.8 mph; without Forza Editions it is the Hennessey Venom F5 at 304.7 mph. Playground publishes no ranking of its own.

  • Forza Edition Cars

Forza Horizon 6 has 19 Forza Edition cars on Playground's list as of Nov 3, 2026, cars "fitted with extreme modifications", from Wheelspins and the Festival Playlist, the Collection Journal, Aftermarket sales and VIP Membership. The 2012 Nissan GT-R Black Edition (R35) Forza Edition is the best known.

  • Free Cars and Loyalty Rewards

Forza Horizon 6 gives free cars to every player: three starter cars, three at the first Wristband, ten Festival Playlist rewards each series, Series History Rewards and occasional gifts such as the 2021 McLaren Sabre. Owners of earlier Forza games get up to six loyalty cars, from a 2013 SRT Viper GTS to a 2021 Mercedes-AMG ONE.

  • Japanese Cars

Forza Horizon 6 lists 167 Japanese cars as of Nov 3, 2026, a quarter of its 667: Nissan 42, Toyota 38, Honda 30, Mazda 18, Subaru 18, Mitsubishi 14 and seven more. Every one is listed here by make with its class and how to get it.

  • Treasure Cars

Forza Horizon 6 has ten Treasure Cars as of Nov 3, 2026: abandoned cars found from Mei's photo clues, one in each of nine regions at launch plus the 1970 Citroën 2CV added in Series 6. Found cars are restored and can be driven at once.

  • Upgrades and Tuning

Forza Horizon 6 lets players upgrade parts, swap engines and tune any car they own, and share or download tunes; new this time are Forza Aero set per car and motorcycle engine swaps for kei cars. Drag Tires were reworked on Jun 15, 2026, and Series 6 and 7 added many engine swaps.

Events

  • Drift Attack

Drift Attack is Forza Horizon 6's permanent drift arena at the Shimanoyama Circuit, added on Sep 7, 2026: drive through the gantry and score as many drift points as you can in one lap. It unlocks with the Yellow Wristband, and completing it in the Collection Journal gives the 1990 Jaguar XJ-S Forza Edition.

  • PR Stunts

Forza Horizon 6 has five kinds of PR Stunt: Speed Traps, Speed Zones, Drift Zones, Danger Signs and Trailblazers, each rated in Stars. Every PR Stunt leaderboard was wiped on Nov 2, 2026 with the Series 7 update after score exploits were fixed; Journal items already earned were kept.

  • Races and Event Types

Forza Horizon 6's official Festival events are Road, Dirt and Cross Country races, Time Attack Circuits, Drag Meets, PR Stunts and Bonus Boards, with Showcases and Horizon Rush as Wristband events and Street Races and Touge Battles in Discover Japan. Goliaths return, led by the Colossus on Legend Island.

  • Showcases and Horizon Rush

Forza Horizon 6 earns each Wristband at a Wristband Event, either a Showcase or a Horizon Rush. The two Showcases are Mech My Day, a race against the giant mech Chaser Zero, and Flight Club, and Horizon Rush is a new timed obstacle course at Tokyo City Docks, Sotoyama Ski Resort and Irokawa Space Center.

  • Street Races and Touge Battles

In Forza Horizon 6, Touge Battles are night races against one opponent down narrow mountain passes, and Street Races are night races with no class restrictions. Both are Discover Japan events, so they earn Stamps in the Collection Journal rather than Wristband progress.

  • Time Attack Circuits

Forza Horizon 6's Time Attack Circuits are open-world tracks where you drive through a gantry and hot-lap for your fastest time, earning Credits and XP every lap. They range from road courses to offroad parks, include Hokubu and one on Legend Island, and add temporary circuits such as Edamame, back from Nov 5, 2026.

Festival

  • Accessibility and AutoDrive

Forza Horizon 6 adds three accessibility features to the series, a customizable High Contrast Mode, Car Proximity Radar and AutoDrive, and keeps the earlier ones, from full controller remapping to a screen reader and color-blind modes. American and British Sign Language interpreters for cinematics arrived on Aug 10, 2026.

  • Campaign and Story

In Forza Horizon 6 you arrive in Japan as a tourist with no fame, travel with friends Mei and Jordy, qualify for the Horizon Festival and climb seven Wristbands to become a Horizon Legend. A second path, Discover Japan, runs alongside it through the Collection Journal.

  • Collection Journal and Discover Japan

The Collection Journal in Forza Horizon 6 tracks Discover Japan, the exploration path with seven Stamps from Yellow to Gold. Stamps come from collecting cars, photographing murals, smashing mascots, finding landmarks, Stories, Street and Touge Races and the Raku-Raku delivery job, and the Gold Stamp makes you a Master Explorer.

  • Drivatars and Difficulty

Forza Horizon 6's AI racers are Drivatars, set by a difficulty level that runs from Novice up through levels such as Above Average and Highly Skilled. At launch they were often too fast at high difficulty; Playground rebalanced them on Jun 15, 2026 and cut AI collisions on Jul 13, 2026. Difficulty and assists can be changed at any time.

  • Horizon Stories

Horizon Stories in Forza Horizon 6 are short side chapters, each usually a drive, a short cutscene and a three-star challenge, that feed Discover Japan. They include Day Trips around Japan, a Tokyo drift club and a story with photographer Larry Chen, and 81 Stars earn the Storyteller achievement.

  • Skills, XP and Wheelspins

In Forza Horizon 6, driving Skills and events earn XP that raises your player level, Horizon Play has its own levels and badges, and Wheelspins and Super Wheelspins only start after you qualify for the Horizon Festival. Playground made spins rarer to earn and more rewarding than in Forza Horizon 5.

  • Landmarks

Forza Horizon 6's Japan holds real landmarks you can drive up to and photograph for the Collection Journal, among them Shibuya Crossing, Tokyo Tower, Nachi Falls, Ruriko-ji, Hirosaki Castle, Ine, Shirakawa-go, Irokawa Space Center and Daikoku. Discovering 10 earns the Pin It! achievement.
