The first three Forza Horizon games were set in Colorado (Forza Horizon, Oct 23, 2012), southern France and northern Italy (Forza Horizon 2, Sep 30, 2014) and Australia (Forza Horizon 3, 2016). All three are delisted; Forza Horizon 6 rewards their owners with a loyalty car.
The first three Forza Horizon games were Forza Horizon (Oct 23, 2012, Colorado, Xbox 360), Forza Horizon 2 (Sep 30, 2014, southern France and northern Italy, Xbox One and Xbox 360) and Forza Horizon 3 (September 2016, Australia, Xbox One and Windows 10). All three are by Playground Games, all three set the shape Forza Horizon 6 still follows, a music festival on the open road, and all three have been taken off sale: in 2016, 2018 and 2020. Owners can still play them, and owning any of them unlocks a loyalty car in Forza Horizon 6. The clip is Forza Horizon 6's Sep 25, 2025 reveal teaser, with Colorado and France license plates on its wall.

Forza Horizon (2012)
Playground Games was a new studio, established in 2010 in Leamington Spa, when it made the first Forza Horizon for Microsoft, the open-world partner to Turn 10 Studios' track racer Forza Motorsport (see Playground Games). It came out on Oct 23, 2012 in North America, on Xbox 360 only, set in Colorado around the Horizon Festival, and scored 85 on Metacritic from 83 critics. Its online races held eight players, half of Forza Motorsport 4's 16.
Its one expansion, the Rally Expansion Pack of Dec 18, 2012, added five rally cars and rally upgrades for any car, for 1,600 Microsoft Points or free with the Season Pass. Microsoft delisted the game and its DLC on Oct 20, 2016. No car count from an official source was found for this page.
Forza Horizon 2 (2014)
Forza Horizon 2 came out on Sep 30, 2014 in North America, Playground's first Xbox One game, with an Xbox 360 version as well. It moved the festival to southern France and northern Italy, which a later Forza Horizon 5 anniversary event called "Southern Europe". It had more than 200 cars on Xbox One and scored 86 on Metacritic from 85 critics. Reviewers singled out its Drivatars, the AI rivals learned from real players' driving, as "challenging without being mindlessly aggressive".
The Storm Island expansion, Dec 16, 2014, was Xbox One only and cost $19.99: off-road racing in storms and at night, 90 new events with five new event types, off-road upgrades for every car, and a handful of new cars including a Barn Find, the kind of hidden car that Barn Finds in Forza Horizon 6 continues. The Xbox One version left the Xbox Store on Sep 30, 2018, and owners kept it.
Forza Horizon 3 (2016)
Forza Horizon 3 took the festival to Australia in September 2016; Metacritic dates it Sep 23, the Ultimate Edition's early start. It was Playground's first game for Windows 10 PC, with Xbox Play Anywhere, and it scored 91 on Xbox One from 91 critics, the series' best until Forza Horizon 4. It was announced with "over 350" cars, a figure from a weak source. Microsoft said in February 2017 that it had sold more than 2.5 million units and that the Forza franchise had passed $1 billion in retail sales.
It had two expansions: Blizzard Mountain on Dec 13, 2016, a snowy area sold alone or in the $34.99 Expansion Pass, and Hot Wheels on May 9, 2017, with orange tracks and loops. Hot Wheels came back as Forza Horizon 5's first expansion, and that one in turn helped build Forza Horizon 6's elevated Tokyo roads. Forza Horizon 3 reached "End of Life" on Sep 27, 2020 and left the Microsoft Store; its servers stayed up for owners.
What Forza Horizon 6 keeps from them
The Horizon Festival, Drivatar rivals, Barn Finds and expansions that add a new place to drive were all already in these three games. Forza Horizon 6 also nods to them directly: its reveal teaser in September 2025 celebrated "the many iconic locations" of earlier festivals, and its loyalty rewards give owners of each game a car after the first Tokyo City race with Mei (see Free Cars and Loyalty Rewards). The later games are on Forza Horizon 4, Forza Horizon 5 and Forza Horizon Games in Order.
