What critics praised
The map came first. GameSpot called it the series' best map, and TechRadar said it fixes Forza Horizon 5's "uninteresting map" and "samey events"; IGN singled out its looks and sound. The Japan Map and Tokyo City were the most praised parts across reviews, along with the handling, which Kotaku said is "as good as ever". The new structure won support too: Destructoid said the Wristbands add "a lot of purpose to the grind", and reviewers liked the Collection Journal and the volume of things to do, which GamesRadar+ put at "easily 100 hours" of solo content. TechRadar praised Aftermarket Cars, and The Guardian credited "an impressive array of accessibility options" (see Accessibility and AutoDrive).
What critics criticized
The common thread is familiarity. PC Gamer said it "isn't an ambitious sequel", Kotaku that the formula is "starting to feel stale" with "half-baked new ideas", and Thurrott's pre-release hands-on was titled "More of the Same". Pure Xbox wanted more new race and event types, especially in Tokyo. Building and customization drew specific complaints: Dexerto named the "wonky building systems" (see The Estate) and PCGamesN said "lacking vehicle customization holds it back" (see Customization and Liveries). GamesRadar+ found the racing "pretty tame" against the genre's best, and Gamereactor and IGN Deutschland felt it only touches Japan's car culture lightly. GameSpot, approving overall, noted its "obsession with showering you in positive stimuli". In the clip, GamingBolt's May 14, 2026 review makes the same point: its changes are evolutionary rather than revolutionary.
Several reviews were written before the full game was in place. PC Gamer had only spring and summer during its review period, with the seasonal playlist switched off, so the seasons and the live series were judged later by players, not critics.
What players say on Steam

Steam's page does not say why recent reviews are lower. The launch period's known problems, lost saves, PC crashes, AMD frame rates and audio crackling, are on Known Issues and Fixes, and Drivatar difficulty, a common launch complaint, on Drivatars and Difficulty. Player numbers are on Player Count and Sales.
